Barley is an annual, cool season bunchgrass that grows 2–4 ft tall (Ball et al., 1996). Stems are hollow and jointed. Leaf surfaces and leaf margins are smooth, tapered, and arise on the stem above ground level (Brown, 1979). Nodes and internodes of stems are hairless (Radford et al., 1968). Seeds are borne on a spike inflorescence ¾ to 4 inches (2–10 cm) long with flower clusters in groups of three long bristles (called awns).
